Old Synagogue Stavenhagen

Old Synagogue Stavenhagen

Stavenhagen

The synagogue was probably built in the 18th century and was used by the Jewish community of the town of Stavenhagen until 1938. The front building served as a residence for the community's own rabbi. The half-timbered building contains a large prayer hall and an entrance hall, from which a staircase leads to the women's gallery. The synagogue was built in the backyard of the community center, i.e. hidden, to protect it from the hostile eyes of the Christian village community at the time. It was only when the Jews were fully emancipated that they built a representative synagogue that was visible in the street. It is special above all because it is one of the few synagogues to have survived the Kristallnacht on November 9, 1938. It was then forced to be sold and was used as a carpentry workshop until the 1980s. In 2011, the "Old Synagogue Stavenhagen" association was founded with the aim of renovating the historic building, which has already achieved monument status. Previous efforts to renovate the building had failed for financial reasons. Anyone interested in visiting the synagogue should contact Klaus Salewski by email or telephone: Sali-45@web.de or 0152 27779181

Jürgenstorf church

Jürgenstorf church

Stavenhagen

The Jürgenstorf church is clearly visible from all roads leading into the parish and cannot be missed. The Gothic church in Jürgenstorf was built in the 14th century. After the 30-year war, only part of the tower remained. The church was rebuilt around 1700 and restored in 2006. The church is a rectangular half-timbered building with a west tower and mono-pitched roof. Inside the church is a vestibule containing the former patron's lodge. Today, this part is used as a winter church. The altar and the altarpiece depicting the crucifixion of Jesus are particularly impressive. The two wings show the apostles. The construction of the altar shrine, which is rather unusual for Mecklenburg, and the box wings suggest that it was created in the Oberbruch region (Frankfurt/Oder). On the left is the pulpit from the early 18th century. The four evangelists are immortalized on the pulpit. In the bell tower, which can be reached via a separate staircase, there are two medieval bells. The parish cemetery is also located on the church grounds. Here you will find the resting place of the former estate manager J.F. Schecker, who served the Low German writer Fritz Reuter as a model for his famous novel character "Unkel Bräsig". Guided tours of Jürgenstorf church are possible by prior arrangement by telephone. Please contact Heidelore Köhler on 039955 20782 or 0162 9894557.

Stavenhagen City Church

Stavenhagen City Church

Stavenhagen

The town church in Stavenhagen was built in the 18th century. It is not known whether there was a church or chapel in the town’s old castle prior to the Reformation. However, there is evidence of an older church from the 13th century and an addition to the old tower in 1601. Until the Reformation, there was a castle chaplain in the town. The predecessor to today’s church was a half-timbered structure. During the Thirty Years’ War, the old church was severely damaged on several occasions. Despite numerous renovations and repairs, the building’s condition remained unsatisfactory, so it was decided to build a new church. It took a full century before the financial resources for a new building were available. In 1774, the half-timbered church was demolished, and on July 16, 1774, the cornerstone for the current church was laid. In 1782, the church was consecrated by Pastor Knöchel. The church tower was not completed until 1790. It houses two bells. The tower clock was fitted with a new mechanism in 1996.
