The Duke's Grave in the Mönchgut Forest

The “Duke’s Tomb” in the Mönchgut Forest is one of the many megalithic tombs preserved on the island of Rügen.
Investigations in the 1920s, as well as the systematic excavation conducted in 1960 by Dr. Ingeburg Nilius of the Department of Prehistory and Early History at the University of Greifswald at this Funnel Beaker Culture megalithic tomb, yielded a wealth of artifacts. These include amber beads, the remains of approximately 50 ceramic vessels, stone axes and adzes, and cross-cut arrowheads, as well as skeletal remains of at least 20 individuals. In the “Herzogsgrab” (Duke’s Tomb), a large dolmen with a vestibule and a trapezoidal burial chamber, evidence of a later burial from the Bronze Age was found.
