The "Little Lighthouse" in the south of the island of Hiddensee
In the south of the island of Hiddensee, on the Gellen, stands the Gellen lighthouse, built in 1905. Because of its location on the island, it is also known as the "South Lighthouse" and, due to its small size of just 12 m in height, as the "Little Lighthouse". It was built from red and white painted iron segments on a stone base. A cross beacon is a fixed light that flashes evenly in the dark and shines in a 360 degree radius. The light of the cross marker light is used by coastal shipping as a signal for navigating the Gellenstrom fairway from the Baltic Sea towards Stralsund.
