Gustow's Atonement Stone

Gustow's Atonement Stone

Gustow

The 16th-century expiatory stone is located in the Gustow cemetery. This expiatory stone from 1510 can be found in the Gustow cemetery. It is approximately 2.50 m high, 0.60 m wide, and depicts a crucifix with two angels. To the left of it is a kneeling man with a sword on his head; to the right, a chalice and a coat of arms featuring a rune-like family mark are visible. Penitential stones are also known as “murder stones.” They were supposedly erected at the site where a murder took place. According to the inscription on the stone, the preacher at the time, Thomas Norenberg, is said to have been killed here by drunken farmers.
