📍 Darze

The Fangelturm is a stone castle which was built in 1360 as part of a fortification for the outer city defense of Parchim. The structure has a height of 10 meters, a wall thickness of 1 meter and 100 layers of stone. The entrance to the tower is 2.50 meters above the ground and used to be accessible via a retractable ladder. This observation post was used for defense and to notify the guard at the Wockertor through the embrasures. At that time, robber barons in particular posed a threat, driving herds of cattle from the town's fields. The name Fangelturm has only been used since the beginning of the 19th century and suggests that it was used as a prison.
Today, this tower is the only one of its kind in Mecklenburg and is one of the oldest buildings in the state.
The Fangelturm is open to the public from May to October from 08:00 - 18:00.
