Steam ferry museum - single-railway steam ferry

Wolgast · Greifswald & Umgebung · 54.0537° N, 13.7820° E
Steam ferry museum - single-railway steam ferry

Built in 1890, the steam ferry "Stralsund" offered space for up to three passenger carriages with around 300 passengers and was originally built for the Stralsund - Altefähr (Rügen) route.

Today, the ferry is in its last place of operation as a museum ship in Wolgast harbor and can be visited. The single-railway steam ferry "Stralsund" from 1890 is the only surviving ship of its kind in Germany. Originally built for the ferry service between Stralsund and Altefähr on Rügen, it was used in Swinemünde from 1901 due to increased capacity requirements on this line. After the war, the ferry was used for the trajectory between the island of Usedom and the mainland in the port of Wolgast, as there was no longer a rail connection between the island of Usedom and the mainland between the blowing up of the Karnin railroad lift bridge in 1945 and the new track over the Wolgast Peene Bridge until 2000. It was last used in the 1990s to replace the old railcars with new vehicles from the Usedomer Bäderbahn. Visitors can view the engine room, the mess room and the bridge of the ferry moored in the museum harbor.

Museum steam ferry "Stralsund" - unique railroad steam ferry in Wolgast

The steam ferry "Stralsund" is a maritime monument of special historical significance in the museum harbor of Wolgast. Built in 1890, the single-railway steam ferry is the only surviving ship of its kind in the whole of Germany and a fascinating testimony to the early history of transportation on the German Baltic coast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

From Stralsund to Usedom - the ferry's eventful history

Originally built for the ferry connection between Stralsund and Altefähr on Rügen, the "Stralsund" transported up to three railroad carriages and around 300 passengers at a time. From 1901, it was used in Swinemünde before being given a new task after the Second World War: After the Karnin railroad lift bridge was blown up in 1945, there was no rail connection between the island of Usedom and the mainland for decades. The ferry took over the trajectory traffic in Wolgast harbor and thus maintained the rail connection to the island - until the opening of the new Peene Bridge in 2000.

Engine room, bridge and mess room - tour on board

Today, the moored ferry is a museum ship in Wolgast harbor and can be explored by visitors. A tour leads through the engine room, the mess room and over the bridge of the historic ship - a worthwhile excursion for history buffs and families, ideal for combining with a visit to the nearby islands of Usedom or Rügen.
