St. Mary's City Church, Usedom
St.
Mary’s Church in Usedom was first mentioned in 1337. After the great fire of 1475, the church was rebuilt. The first restoration took place in 1726 (wooden pillars and beam ceiling), followed by another from 1891 to 1893 (choir, upper part of the tower, and interior design—Neo-Gothic). Noteworthy features include the late-medieval tombstone of the ducal couple Ratibor and Pribislawa, founders of the Grobe Monastery near Usedom, and the Grüneberg organ. The church serves as a venue for the Usedom Music Festival.
St. Mary’s Town Church in Usedom – History Since the Middle Ages
St. Mary’s Town Church in Usedom is one of the oldest and most significant religious buildings on the island of Usedom in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It was first mentioned in a document in 1337. After the great town fire of 1475, the church was completely rebuilt and has shaped the character of the historic town of Usedom ever since.
Restorations and Neo-Gothic Renovation of St. Mary’s Church
In 1726, the first extensive restoration took place, during which wooden pillars and a beam ceiling were added. A second major renovation took place between 1891 and 1893: the choir, the upper part of the tower, and the interior design were redesigned in the Neo-Gothic style, giving the church its characteristic appearance that remains to this day.
Art Treasures – Tombstone and the Grüneberg Organ
Particularly worth seeing are the late-Medieval tomb slab of the ducal couple Ratibor and Pribislawa—who went down in the region’s history as the founders of the Grobe Monastery near Usedom—as well as the historic Grüneberg organ. Both of these features make the church a cultural and historical highlight on the island of Usedom.
Usedom City Church as a Venue for the Usedom Music Festival
Beyond its function as a place of worship, St. Mary’s Church regularly hosts the renowned Usedom Music Festival. In the unique acoustic and atmospheric setting of the historic church building, high-quality concerts are presented—a cultural experience that further enriches the island of Usedom as a destination on Germany’s Baltic Sea coast.

● Usedom
The island of Usedom is one of the most bird-rich areas in Germany. A total of over 280 species have been observed, 150 of which also breed here. Eleven species of birds of prey alone regularly breed in the nature park, including the white-tailed eagle. The Usedom Island Nature Park Information Center is located next to the Usedom Town Information Office on the first floor of the Klaus-Bahlsen-Haus Usedom. This visitor center was built and furnished with great commitment and generous support from the foundation of the same name. On the premises of the former Usedom town station building, visitors are provided with information on the natural environment of the island of Usedom using modern technology. The main theme of "water", a characteristic element of the island of Usedom, runs through the entire exhibition. Themes include the beach and dunes as a habitat, life in the reeds, fen use using the example of the Thurbruch and coastal dynamics using the example of the Streckelsberg. The topic of "Nature conservation on Usedom" is also explained using specimens such as sea eagles, otters and beavers. The Usedom Island Nature Park exhibition is complemented by a 23-minute audio-slide show on Usedom Island Nature Park, which can be seen in the hall of the Klaus-Bahlsen-Haus Usedom.
