Wiecker wooden bascule bridge
Wiecker wooden bascule bridge in Greifswald - a bridge with history
The Wiecker wooden bascule bridge is one of the most striking architectural monuments in the Hanseatic city of Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Built in 1887 based on a Dutch model, it spans the River Ryck and connects the two Greifswald districts of Wieck and Eldena. The bridge is not accessible to vehicles - it is reserved exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists.
Folding bridge over the Ryck - technology you can touch
If you're lucky, you'll experience one of the coveted bridge trains: When required, the wooden bascule bridge is opened to allow boats to pass. The process takes around ten minutes and can be observed up close. Not far from the bridge, the Ryck flows into the Dänische Wiek, part of the Greifswalder Bodden - one of the most important coastal waters in the German Baltic Sea.
