Surfspot Hiddensee
Surfspot Hiddensee: wild waves on the Baltic Sea in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
The surf spot Hiddensee is one of the most unusual surfing experiences on the German Baltic Sea coast. The elongated island lies off the west coast of Rügen and offers impressive conditions when the wind blows from southwest to north. On stormy days, waves of up to three meters can build up on the open Baltic Sea side - a real rarity by Baltic Sea standards. Advanced windsurfers and kitesurfers get their money's worth here.
Vitte surf school: rental and courses directly on HiddenseeSince almost no private cars are allowed on Hiddensee, the question of transporting equipment arises. The surf school in Vitte, which is located directly between the Bodden and the open Baltic Sea, opposite the old mill, offers a practical solution. Kite, windsurfing and SUP equipment is available for hire there, as well as windsurfing, SUP and sailing courses. Toilets and showers are also available. The spot is less suitable for kite beginners due to groynes and shallow depths.
Nature experience and tranquillity away from the crowdsWhat sets Hiddensee apart from other surf spots on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - for example around Stralsund, Rügen or Fischland-Darß-Zingst - is the special atmosphere of the car-free island. Families and nature-loving water sports enthusiasts will find relaxation and an unspoiled landscape here. The natural beach on the Baltic Sea side also offers an authentic island experience on quieter days, far away from the crowds of tourists.
Journey to Hiddensee: ferry from Stralsund or Schaprode
Hiddensee can only be reached by boat. Ferries depart regularly from Stralsund, which has a well-connected train station - the crossing takes around an hour. If you want to get there faster, you can take a water cab. Alternatively, you can leave from Schaprode on Rügen, which can be reached by car via the B96. Surf equipment should ideally be rented locally due to the island's car-free nature.
