Malchow town windmill
Two of the former seven windmills are still preserved in the town: The so-called town mill and the Achtkant.
Both are owned by the island town of Malchow, which is committed to preserving the monuments that shape the townscape. Following the completion of restoration work, which began in 1995, the town mill, which is of the gallery Dutch type and has a rotating cap, once again has fully functional blades. Inside the mill, three floors are freely accessible to visitors. In the entrance hall, a small photo exhibition offers an insight into the history of the monument alongside numerous pieces of equipment. One floor up, the collection entitled "Shamans - idols - legends - traces of prehistory and early history in the Malchow area" is open to all interested parties. There, guests can visit the oldest Malchow grave, which was discovered by archaeologists during excavation work. The third floor once again displays pieces of mill equipment. If the weather permits and one of the volunteers is present, it is possible to visit the surrounding gallery.
Malchow town windmill - gallery Dutchman on the Mecklenburg Baltic coast
The Malchow town windmill is one of the most remarkable cultural monuments in the inland Baltic Sea region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Of the formerly seven windmills in the urban area of the island town of Malchow, two are still preserved today: the so-called town mill and the octagon. The town mill is of the gallery Dutch type and has a rotating cap. After extensive restoration work, which began in 1995, it now has fully functional wings again.
Three exhibition levels in the historic Malchow mill
Visitors can freely explore three floors within the mill. In the entrance area, a photo exhibition provides insights into the history of the monument, complemented by original furnishings. On the second floor, the collection "Shamans - idols - legends: traces of prehistory and early history in the Malchow area" presents archaeological finds from the region - including the oldest known Malchow mill, which was discovered during excavation work. The third floor shows more original mill equipment.
Wraparound gallery with a view over Malchow
If the weather is suitable and a volunteer is present, you can also visit the mill's surrounding gallery. From there, there is a view over the island town of Malchow, which lies in the middle of the Mecklenburg Lake District - not far from the Baltic Sea coast with well-known destinations such as Rostock, Wismar and the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula.
