Sternberg town wall with mill gate
Stadtmauer mit Mühlentor Sternberg - history in the middle of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
The Sternberg town wall with mill gate is one of the most remarkable historical remains in the Baltic Sea region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In the Middle Ages, the town wall surrounded the entire old town of Sternberg and originally protected it with four town gates. Today, the mill gate is the only surviving one of these gates and is therefore an important testimony to the town's history.
From the 30 Years' War to renovation - the history of the MühlentorIn 1629, the city wall and city gates were destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. The mill gate was rebuilt in its current form in 1839. The gate, built in late Gothic style, was extensively renovated in 1998. A staircase in the rampart leads up to the gate, which is still accessible today with its characteristic up and down stairs. In November 2007, the renovated rampart wall was also fitted with a modern lighting system, which effectively highlights the historic structure in the evening.
