St. Catherine's Church Trent
St. Katharinen Church Trent - medieval brick Gothic on Rügen
St. Catherine's Church in Trent is one of the most remarkable brick Gothic churches on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. As it stands at a fork in one of Rügen's old country roads, it is also known as the "wayside church". Trent itself was first mentioned in a document in 1311 and can therefore look back on a long history.
Chancel, nave and baroque interior
The choir room is the oldest part of the church and dates from around 1400. The nave was built at the end of the 15th century as an imposing three-aisled hall - presumably by the same builders who also worked on St. Mary's in Stralsund and St. Jacob's in Gingst. The interior is dominated by a uniform baroque interior with altar, baptismal font and confessional, which was created between 1752 and 1754 by the Stralsund sculptor Michael Müller. Only the pulpit dates from the late Renaissance. Gravestones and epitaphs bear witness to the close links to the von Platen patronage family.
Concert summer and church tours in TrentIn addition to regular church services, which take place fortnightly, the church is part of the concert summer on Rügen. Concerts are held here in July and August, usually on Sundays or Wednesdays. Visits are possible from May to October, and guided tours of the church are offered after church services.
