Rubenow Monument
Rubenow Monument on the Baltic Sea - a monument to the university's history
The Rubenow Monument is the centerpiece of Rubenowplatz in Greifswald and one of the most remarkable historical landmarks on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The monument depicts important personalities from the history of the University of Greifswald and thus combines regional educational history with an impressive work of art in public space.
Germany's largest free-standing cast zinc monument in GreifswaldWith a height of 12.10 meters, the Rubenow Monument is the largest free-standing cast zinc monument in Germany. It is made of galvanized copper-plated zinc and stands on a dark red polished granite base. The neo-Gothic style of the monument is reminiscent of the towers of the nearby churches of St. Jakobi and St. Nicolai - an architectural dialog that still characterizes the cityscape of Greifswald today.
Greifswald as a starting point for the Baltic Sea region
Greifswald is located in the heart of the Baltic Sea coast of Western Pomerania and is an excellent base for excursions throughout the region. Rügen, Usedom and the Greifswald Bodden are easily accessible from here. The Rubenow Monument can be ideally combined with a tour of the historic old town, whose medieval brick Gothic style is reminiscent of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund.
