Rostock Gate
The Rostock Gate - Gothic town gate in Teterow
The Rostock Gate in Teterow is one of the most impressive examples of medieval town architecture in the Baltic Sea region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. As one of two preserved Gothic town gates in the town, it was once part of Teterow's historic town fortifications. Originally built as a double gate, it secured access to the medieval town together with the Malchin Gate.
Historic town fortifications in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Such preserved town gates are rare and valuable in the region. Similar Gothic brick buildings can be found along the entire southern Baltic coast - for example in Rostock, Stralsund and Greifswald, where Hanseatic architecture still characterizes the cityscape today. Teterow is located in inland Mecklenburg, not far from the Baltic Sea coast and the Mecklenburg Lake District, and can be easily combined with a visit to the nearby coastal regions.
Teterow as an excursion destination between the Baltic Sea and the Lake District
If you are traveling along the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - be it Fischland-Darß-Zingst, the Fischland peninsula or the area around Rostock - Teterow is a good place to plan a day trip inland. The Rostock Gate is a quiet but impressive witness to the medieval history of this region.
