Market square in Neustrelitz - a masterpiece of baroque town planning
The Neustrelitz market square is one of the most architecturally remarkable squares in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. From an octagonal center, the entire town complex unfolds like a star - a layout that is based on an ideal Italian town and goes back to plans by the Braunschweig master builder Christoph Julius Löwe. Neustrelitz is located in the heart of the Mecklenburg Lake District, making it an ideal starting point for excursions to the Baltic coast, for example to Rostock, Stralsund or Greifswald.
Design and highlights of the octagonal market square
The central traffic circle on the market square is framed by 32 small-leaved ash trees and enlivened by a water feature with 36 fountains. The current design dates back to a redesign in 2003/04, which took various historical references into account. If you want to experience the square from a bird's eye view, you should climb the town church tower: The 45-metre-high viewing platform offers a magnificent view of the entire ensemble.
Market square as a starting point for NeustrelitzThe tourist and national park information office is located directly on the market square, at the junction of the pedestrian zone and the town hall. From here, the palace gardens and the town harbor are within easy walking distance. The market square thus forms the lively center of this charming residential town in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
