Malchow Monastery on the Baltic Sea - history on Lake Malchow
The Malchow Monastery is one of the most remarkable historical sites in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Located directly on the shores of Lake Malchow, the monastery complex can look back on a history spanning well over 700 years. Originally founded in Neu Röbel on the Müritz before 1274, the monastery was relocated to Alt Malchow on the southern shore of Lake Malchow on May 29, 1298 - where it can still be experienced today.
From monastery to convent - a special reformation in Malchow
While the Reformation led to the dissolution of the monasteries in large parts of Mecklenburg in 1572, Malchow took a different path: the Protestant faith took hold and the complex was converted into a ladies' convent. Together with the monasteries of Dobbertin and Ribnitz, Malchow was one of the three state monasteries that were placed under state supervision in 1918 - a unique historical development in the region.
Malchow Monastery as an excursion destination in the Lake District and on the Baltic Sea coast
The Malchow monastery complex is located in the Mecklenburg Lake District and can be wonderfully combined with other excursion destinations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Whether a detour to the Baltic coast to Rostock, Stralsund or Greifswald or a round trip through the lake district - Malchow offers a quiet, culturally and historically valuable antipole to the well-known coastal destinations such as Rügen, Usedom or Fischland-Darß-Zingst
