Climate forest Schuenhagen
Climate forest Schuenhagen - afforested forest area near the Baltic Sea
The Schuenhagen climate forest is located in the northern Pomeranian forest landscape, not far from the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula on the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The reforestation area was created in 2008 by planting bird cherry as the main tree species, supplemented by other noble tree species. Today, the trees have reached a considerable height of 7 to 10 meters after around 14 years.
German-American climate forest and ecological featuresOn October 28, 2009, a major planting campaign took place together with the American Tourism Society - since then, the area has officially been called the "1st German-American Climate Forest". After an extreme flood in 2011, which destroyed many seedlings, around 1,000 hornbeams were replanted. For ecological reasons, a stepped forest edge was also created - with blackthorn, snowball, field maple and wild apple.
Forest shares for climate forests in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
The Schuenhagen climate forest is part of a state-wide project: since 2007, over 100 hectares of new, climate-adapted forest have been planted at 19 locations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The reforestation was financed by so-called forest shares, which were purchased by holidaymakers, residents and businesses. At planting events, interested parties can talk to forestry experts and learn more about forest development in the region.
