Church Groß Zicker
Kirche Groß Zicker - Gothic gem on the Baltic Sea
The Groß Zicker church on the Mönchgut peninsula is one of the most remarkable historical buildings on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Built around 1360, it is the oldest surviving building on Mönchgut - and therefore older than many well-known sights in the region, including parts of the old town of Stralsund or Greifswald. For more than 650 years, people have gathered here for worship and prayer, in joy and in mourning.
Medieval interior with baroque additions
Despite an eventful history - the church suffered particularly from the wars in the 17th and 19th centuries - its interior has retained its original form. The five-sided, cross-ribbed vaulted choir and the flat-roofed nave still display their bright Gothic beauty today. The oldest furnishings include the altar mensa, the sacramental shrine and a medieval bell. Other pieces were added over the centuries: the baroque pulpit from 1653, the organ from the Grüneberg company from 1864 and the candlestick from the Thiessow pilots from 1868. More recent additions include two bells, a votive nave, the pensive angel and the Jakobstein in front of the church.
Cemetery, weddings and a special atmosphere on Mönchgut
The Groß Zicker church not only attracts history buffs, but is also a popular location for wedding couples. Anyone visiting the church should also take time to visit the old cemetery surrounding the building: With its historic gravestones, it tells an impressive story of the people who lived here over the centuries. The tranquil location on Mönchgut, between the Bodden and the Baltic Sea, makes a visit a special experience during your vacation on Rügen.
