Kalensches Tor Malchin
Kalensches Tor Malchin - Gothic brick gate from the 15th century
The Kalen Gate in Malchin is one of the most important sights in the town in the heart of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Once one of four gates of the medieval town fortifications, it is now the best preserved of its kind. The richly structured Gothic brick building from the 15th century stands out with its striking mono-pitched roof and partially glazed tiles, which give the building a special visual effect.
History of the Kalen Gate: double gate, prison and restoration
Originally built as a double gate, the Kalen Gate lost its main gate in 1837 - it was demolished to raise the passageway. The building served as a prison until the 19th century, before being extensively restored in 1900. This eventful history makes it an authentic testimony to the urban past in the region between the Baltic Sea coast and the Mecklenburg Lake District.
Malchin as an excursion destination in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Malchin is easily accessible in the interior of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is ideal for a day trip from the Baltic Sea coast - for example from Rostock, Stralsund or Greifswald. If you are visiting the coastal regions around Fischland-Darß-Zingst, Rügen or Usedom, you can easily include the Kalensche Tor on your way inland and thus combine the history and nature of the region.
