Chicken ladder - Eldeschleuse Plau am See
Chicken ladder at the Eldeschleuse lock in Plau am See
The chicken ladder at the Elde lock in Plau am See is one of the most charming curiosities in inland Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The unusual name goes back to the vernacular: when the original swing bridge over the Elde lock was blown up in 1945, a new high bridge was built with simple wooden slats nailed on instead of steps - the locals called it the "Häuhnerledder", or chicken ladder. The new bridge built in 2003 still bears this affectionately folksy name.
