Hospitaller Bastion

Hospitaller Bastion
Since 1886, the war memorial has commemorated those from Stralsund who fell in the Prussian-German wars. Before that, the bastion was used as a parade ground. When the Swedes came to power in 1648, the expansion of the town fortifications began with 14 bastions and other fortification systems. A contract concluded on January 13, 1879 between the state of Prussia and the town regulated the transfer of part of the military property to Stralsund, which included the bastions as well as the town walls, town ponds, bridges and individual houses. This treaty and the previous fortification of the town in 1873 formed the basis for the landscaping of the bastions and the edges of the town ponds.

Hospital Bastion on the Baltic Sea - history in the middle of Stralsund

The Hospitaler Bastion is an impressive testimony to Stralsund's history right on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Since 1886, a war memorial here has commemorated the people of Stralsund who fell in the Prussian-German wars. Previously, the area served as a military parade ground - a place that vividly reflects the changing times.

Swedish city fortifications and the legacy of the 14 bastions

When the Swedes came to power in 1648, the systematic construction of an extensive city fortification with 14 bastions, city walls, city ponds and bridges began in Stralsund. This historic defense system had a lasting impact on the cityscape of the Hanseatic city and can still be experienced in parts today.

From military area to green belt - the horticultural transformation

A contract dated January 13, 1879 between the state of Prussia and the city of Stralsund regulated the transfer of military property to the Hanseatic city. Together with the demilitarization of the city in 1873, this treaty formed the basis for the landscaping of the bastions and the edges of the city ponds. This created a green belt around the old town, which still invites you to stroll and explore today - ideal for combining with a visit to the nearby World Heritage Site or a ferry trip across to Rügen.
