Port of Wittow ferry
Wittower Ferry Port - Baltic Sea crossing on Rügen
The port of Wittower Fähre is located on Rassower Strom on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and forms the shortest connection between the island's heartland, known as Muttland, and the northern peninsula of Wittow. The ferry connection is permitted for pedestrians and vehicles up to a permissible total weight of 30 tons. The narrow section at this point measures around 350 meters and separates the Wieker Bodden from the Breetzer Bodden.
North and south ferry jetties on the Rassower StromThe northern jetty is located in the Wittower Fähre district of the municipality of Wiek, on a tapered headland between the two bays. The southern jetty is located between the districts of Vaschvitz and Fischersiedlung in the municipality of Trent. Berths in the north and south harbors are allocated centrally by the harbor master Wittower Fähre Süd. Guest berths can be moored west of the southern ferry pier on the north and west piers; the harbor office is located in the white building on the pier. After consultation with the harbour master, it is also possible to moor at the new jetty to the west of the northern ferry pier.
Nature conservation and water birds on the Rügen BoddenIn harsh winters, when the surrounding bays freeze over, the 350-metre-wide narrow section remains free due to the current from and to the Great Jasmund Bodden as one of the last open water points. This special feature then attracts numerous water birds and makes the area a remarkable refuge for the native wildlife of the Rügen Baltic Sea coast.
