Grand Ducal Kitchen Garden

Grand Ducal Kitchen Garden
The former kitchen garden for the grand ducal court is somewhat hidden behind a brick wall on Franzosenweg. The orange house and wine cellars have also been preserved. Until the First World War, fruit, vegetables and citrus fruits were grown in the kitchen garden to supply the palace kitchen. The kitchen garden was restored for the 2009 Federal Garden Show in Schwerin and useful plants were exhibited. The greenhouse and the orange house are now residential buildings, and part of the area is planted with ornamental plant beds and roses by a non-profit association. The buildings and the garden are part of the Schwerin Residence Ensemble.

The Grand Ducal Kitchen Garden in Schwerin - history and garden culture

Hidden behind a brick wall on Franzosenweg is the Grand Ducal Kitchen Garden in Schwerin - a silent testimony to courtly food culture in the heart of the Mecklenburg royal seat. Until the First World War, fruit, vegetables and citrus fruits were grown here for the palace kitchen of the grand ducal court. The orange house and the historic wine cellars have been preserved to this day, making the ensemble particularly worth seeing.

Restoration for the 2009 Federal Horticultural Show in Schwerin

The kitchen garden was extensively restored for the 2009 Federal Horticultural Show and offered visitors an exhibition of historical useful plants. Today, the greenhouse and the orange house house apartments, while a non-profit association maintains part of the area with ornamental plant beds and roses. The garden and its buildings are part of the Schwerin Residence Ensemble, which has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Schwerin Kitchen Garden - an excursion destination in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Schwerin is located in the west of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is a popular starting point for trips to the Baltic Sea coast - whether to Wismar, Rostock or on to the islands of Rügen and Usedom. If you want to explore the castles, gardens and rich cultural history of the region, the Grand Ducal Kitchen Garden is an authentic and less crowded place away from the well-known sights.
