Greenhouse Garden and Alexandrine Monument
Greenhouse Garden and Alexandrine Monument - English garden art on the Baltic Sea
The Greenhouse Garden in Schwerin is one of the most charming gardens in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The southern palace garden was laid out around 1840 according to plans by the renowned master garden designer Peter Joseph Lenné in the style of English landscape gardens - a favorite project of Grand Duchess Alexandrine, wife of Grand Duke Paul Friedrich and Prussian princess. The Alexandrine Monument in the center of the tree-lined meadow still commemorates her today, her gaze directed towards the so-called Temple of Youth.
Hippodrome, maze and historic buildings in Schwerin Palace GardensIn addition to the park-like garden ensemble with hippodrome and maze, the Green House - once the summer residence of the ducal couple and now a children's daycare center - and the Cavalier's House, which once housed the servants, are also worth seeing. Both buildings lend historical depth to the area. The historic grinding mill is also located in the immediate vicinity. This part of the palace garden was restored in line with its listed status for the 2009 Federal Garden Show and can now be experienced in its original form.
Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin - history in the countryside
Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin had a special affection for this place. Even after her husband's death, she spent time here and left her name to the palace garden. The memorial on the central lawn makes the Greenhouse Garden a place with a personal history - embedded in the impressive cultural landscape between Lake Schwerin and the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
