Engel's Garden at Malchow Monastery
Engelscher Garten at Malchow Monastery - history by the Baltic Sea
The Engelscher Garten at Malchow Monastery is one of the most historic gardens in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. For around 200 years, it has shaped the surroundings of the Malchow monastery and invites visitors to take a peaceful stroll in a historic atmosphere - a worthwhile addition to the region's well-known Baltic Sea destinations such as Rostock, Stralsund and Greifswald.
Johann Jakob Christian Engel - namesake and designer
The garden owes its name to Johann Jakob Christian Engel, who worked as a chef at Malchow Monastery from 1786 to 1819. On his initiative, the grounds southwest of the monastery were redesigned right up to the monastery cemetery. Engel thus laid the foundation stone for a garden that was to endure beyond his time.
Continuous expansion by subsequent generationsEngel's successors continued his work and continuously expanded the grounds. Over the decades, this resulted in a mature garden landscape that can be experienced today as part of the monastic ensemble in Malchow - in the middle of the lake-rich Mecklenburg region, which stretches between the Baltic Sea coast and the Mecklenburg hinterland.
