DDR Museum of Everyday Life Malchow on the Baltic Sea - history you can touch
The GDR Museum of Everyday Life Malchow is a special excursion destination in the Baltic Sea region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Housed in a former cinema and event building, which was ceremoniously opened as a "film palace" on December 14, 1957, the permanent exhibition has been showing an impressive picture of everyday life in the GDR since October 1999. The museum complements the diverse cultural landscape that also characterizes cities such as Rostock, Stralsund and Wismar.
Living room, children's land and technology - experience everyday life in the GDR in Malchow
The exhibition is constantly being expanded and redesigned. Visitors can immerse themselves in recreated living areas from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and discover topics such as cinema, weddings, vacations and technology. Even the children's land of the GDR era can be experienced here - an offer that appeals to young and old alike.
From movie palace to museum - history of the building in MalchowThe Soviet film "The Prologue" was shown at the opening in 1957. The painter and graphic artist Sieghard Dittner, who had created a mural for the entrance hall, was invited as a guest of honor. His works can now be seen in the art museum at the monastery in the island town of Malchow, which has been presenting his work since 2008 - another cultural focal point in the small island town in the middle of the Mecklenburg Lake District, not far from the Baltic Sea coast.
