Old harbor Wismar
Old Port of Wismar - over 800 years of maritime history on the Baltic Sea
The Old Port of Wismar is one of the most remarkable historical ports on the German Baltic Sea coast. Its harbor basin has largely retained its location and shape since 1211 - a rarity that distinguishes Wismar from other Hanseatic cities such as Stralsund, Rostock or Greifswald. Anyone strolling along here is following in the footsteps of a once mighty trading metropolis in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Wismar as a trading center of the Hanseatic League
In the Middle Ages, Wismar developed into one of the most important cities in the Hanseatic League. The port handled wines from Spain, France and Italy, furs and wood from Russia, furs from Norway as well as fish, spices, wax, malt and salt. The flourishing Baltic trade made Wismar a wealthy and powerful city - still visible today in the impressive brick Gothic architecture of the old town.
Traditional ships, excursion steamers and harbor festival in Wismar
Today, the Old Port of Wismar is a landing stage for excursion steamers and a berth for leisure captains and traditional ships such as the Kogge and the Atalanta. Passing cruise ships can also be observed from the quayside. Every year at the beginning of June, the Wismar Harbour Festival transforms the area into a lively meeting place for locals and guests from all over Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Pre-registration with the harbour master is recommended for berths.
