Tramm Church

Tramm Church – simple on the outside, richly decorated on the inside

Tramm Church stands on a hill in the heart of the small village of Tramm in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The church was built in the 15th century and features characteristic masonry made of fieldstones and bricks—an architectural style commonly found in the rural region between Rostock and the Baltic Sea coast. What appears rather modest from the outside turns out to be remarkable on the inside: Numerous late-medieval carved figures and murals bear witness to the artistic care with which the building was adorned.

History and Culture of Remembrance Surrounding the Feldstein Church

The church grounds, enclosed by a fieldstone wall, also bear historical traces of more recent eras. Two commemorative plaques honor those from Tramm and the neighboring village of Bahlenhüschen who fell in World War I and World War II. A war memorial on the grounds also commemorates the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. The Tramm Church is thus not only a sacred architectural monument but also a quiet place of collective remembrance in this rural corner of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
