City forest
The Stralsund city forest - a city forest on the moor pond.
The Stralsund city forest is primarily used for recreation, to improve the quality of life in the city, to supply the citizens with wood and, of course, for nature conservation. It is an attractive green belt within the city, covers almost 50 hectares of water and land and was originally a ground moraine. This is why a layer of peat up to seven meters thick still rests under the moor pond today. The very nutrient-rich and moist soil favors the growth of plants such as reed beds and silver willows. Many different paths and trails lead through the wooded area, which extends north to southwest around the moor pond. This means that a walk around the moor pond is always a walk through the forest.
Stadtwald Stralsund - a green oasis in the Hanseatic city
The Stralsund city forest is an almost 50-hectare nature and recreation area in the middle of the well-known Hanseatic city on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It stretches north to southwest around the moor pond and forms an attractive green belt that combines recreation, nature conservation and the supply of wood for the citizens.
Moor pond and peat layer - geological features in the city forest
The municipal forest goes back to an original ground moraine. A layer of peat up to seven meters thick still lies beneath the bog pond today, giving the soil its characteristic nutrient-rich and moist character. This special subsoil favors the growth of typical moor plants such as reed beds and silver willows, which give the area its unmistakable appearance.
Walking and experiencing nature around the moor pond in Stralsund
Numerous paths and trails lead through the forest area, so a walk around the moor pond is also a walk through the forest. The city forest is therefore an excellent excursion destination for visitors to the region - whether as a quiet walk between a visit to Stralsund's old town and a day trip to Rügen or Fischland-Darß-Zingst.
