Storage Facility on Katharinenberg
The SPEICHER is an eco-sociocultural center in Stralsund’s Old Town.
The SPEICHER on Katharinenberg in Stralsund is a place for EVERYONE. Inclusion means that every person naturally belongs here. Appearance, social background, language, disabilities, age, and gender do not matter. At the playing card factory, for example, it’s clear how apprentices, participants in entry-level training programs, those performing community service, and workshop staff work and learn together. The facility also serves as a placement site for two Federal Volunteer Service participants. This diversity is not immediately apparent to visitors to the museum workshop and the building. That is inclusion. Through networking with other users in the building, the Old Town, and the outlying neighborhoods of Grünhufe and Knieper West, the SPEICHER is an important, open, and accessible cultural hub in the city. On the ground floor of the brick building of an old steam mill, alongside the playing card factory’s machinery weighing several metric tons, there is a museum workshop where the cultural heritage of letterpress printing is actively kept alive. Work is carried out daily on the typesetting cabinets with their lead type, the Linotype typesetting machine, and the Heidelberg cylinder printing press. The playing card factory thus serves as a career orientation program for those seeking entry-level qualifications and as a support for the apprenticeships of our two future media designers, who are being trained in partnership with two Stralsund-based companies. It also serves as a workspace for the youth workshop run by our youth social work program. Thus, the facility—which is funded by the city—is clearly aligned with the “Printing and Socioculture” program.
Speicher am Katharinenberg – an open cultural space in Stralsund’s Old Town
The SPEICHER am Katharinenberg in Stralsund is far more than just an ordinary cultural center. Housed in a historic brick building that once served as a steam mill, right in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Stralsund, this eco-sociocultural center sees itself as a place for everyone—regardless of background, age, language, or disability. Here, inclusion isn’t just a buzzword—it’s lived out every day.
Museum Workshop and Playing Card Factory – The Living Cultural Heritage of Letterpress Printing
On the ground floor of the building are historic machines weighing several metric tons: composition cabinets with lead type, a Linotype typesetting machine, and a Heidelberg cylinder printing press. These machines are used daily—by apprentices, entry-level trainees, and workshop staff working together. The playing card factory serves as a museum workshop, a place for career orientation, and a training center for future media designers. This living cultural heritage of letterpress printing is a rare testament to artisanal tradition throughout the entire Baltic Sea region.
Sociocultural Activities and Networking in Stralsund and the Baltic Sea Region
SPEICHER is closely connected to Stralsund’s Old Town as well as the Grünhufe and Knieper West neighborhoods. As a low-threshold cultural venue supported by the city, it brings together people from a wide variety of backgrounds—including participants in the Federal Volunteer Service, young people involved in youth social work, and visitors to the museum workshop. Anyone traveling along the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania—whether coming to Stralsund from Rügen, Fischland-Darß-Zingst, or Greifswald—will find here an authentic glimpse into vibrant urban culture away from the usual tourist attractions.
