Rügen Bridge

Although the new Rügen Bridge is not a historic monument, it is a significant landmark of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund.

After a three-year construction period (August 2004 to October 2007), the Rügen Bridge was opened at the end of 2007 by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Construction costs totaled approximately 125 million euros. With a total length of 4,097 meters (2,831 meters of which is the bridge structure), the three-lane bridge connects Germany’s largest island to the mainland. It relieves traffic on the Rügendamm, which had previously been the only connection to the island. At peak times, the Rügendamm handles a daily traffic volume of 30,000 vehicles. The two pylons of the cable-stayed bridge stand 127.75 meters tall and, together with the curved shape of the span, resemble a sailing yacht. Furthermore, as Germany’s tallest cable-stayed bridge at 42 meters, it provides an ideal clearance height for international shipping traffic.

The Rügen Bridge in Stralsund – Germany’s Largest Cable-Stayed Bridge

The Rügen Bridge in Stralsund is now one of the Hanseatic city’s most striking landmarks and defines the skyline of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Baltic Sea coast. After three years of construction, it was completed in October 2007 and officially opened shortly thereafter by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. With a construction cost of approximately 125 million euros, it is a major infrastructure project for the region.

Technical Features of the Cable-Stayed Bridge over the Strelasund

The bridge has a total length of 4,097 meters, of which 2,831 meters comprise the actual bridge structure. Its two distinctive pylons rise 127.75 meters high and are deliberately designed in the shape of a sailing yacht—an elegant nod to the maritime tradition of the Baltic Sea region. The three-lane bridge sits at a height of 42 meters, providing sufficient clearance for international shipping traffic.

Connection between Rügen and the mainland

Before the Rügen Bridge was built, the historic Rügendamm was the only fixed link between Germany’s largest island and the mainland. During peak hours, up to 30,000 vehicles use this route daily. The new crossing significantly relieves traffic on the Rügendamm and makes Rügen—as well as the nearby destinations of Fischland-Darß-Zingst and Greifswald—much more accessible.
