Giebelhaus, 28 Frankenstraße

Stralsund · Rügen · 54.3118° N, 13.0928° E
Giebelhaus, 28 Frankenstraße

A 14th-century Gothic gabled house, featuring a preserved house tree and an original pulley wheel in the attic.

The 14th-century gabled house was restored through a private initiative between 1974 and 1976 and returned to its original condition. Inside, the house tree—which serves as a load-bearing element—and the original hoist wheel in the attic have been preserved, among other features. In 1687, a Baroque gallery was added to the entrance hall. As with all gabled houses of this type, the entrance hall opens onto the courtyard through a large window known as a “Lucht.” The wide stepped gable deserves special attention. Today, the building is occupied by the person who initiated the extensive renovation.

Gothic gabled house at Frankenstraße 28 in Stralsund

The gabled house at Frankenstraße 28 in Stralsund is one of the most remarkable examples of medieval brick Gothic architecture in the Hanseatic city. The building dates back to the 14th century and is thus part of the rich architectural history that, together with cities such as Wismar, Rostock, and Greifswald, makes Stralsund one of the most significant regions for historic urban architecture on the German Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Preserved original features: the house tree and the hoist wheel

Inside the building, remarkable historical details have been preserved: the house tree as a load-bearing structural element, as well as the original hoist wheel in the attic, which was once used to transport goods. A Baroque gallery, added to the entrance hall in 1687, complements the picture of the various architectural eras. On the courtyard side, the entrance hall opens up through a distinctive large window known as a “Lucht”—a typical feature of this type of house.

Private Initiative Saves Stralsund Historic Landmark

Between 1974 and 1976, the gabled house was extensively restored through a private initiative and returned to its original condition. The wide stepped gable deserves special attention. To this day, the initiator of this restoration still lives in the building—an unusual example of living historic preservation in Stralsund’s Old Town, which, together with Wismar, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002.
