former Kramer Company

One of the best-preserved medieval noble residences in a northern German city, located directly on the medieval city wall.

The stone main building in the courtyard, constructed around 1287 and adjoining the city wall via a later extension, is considered the best-preserved medieval noble residence in a northern German city. Despite later alterations from the 16th through the 19th centuries, the medieval architectural form is still clearly recognizable. The house has been owned by the Stralsund Merchants’ Guild since 1493. The hall of the main building was used for gatherings and celebrations. Long-term renovation work is currently underway.

The Former Kramer Company in Stralsund – A Medieval Nobleman’s House Along the City Wall

The former Kramercompagnie in Stralsund is considered one of the best-preserved medieval noble residences in a North German city. The stone main building in the courtyard was erected around 1287 and, together with a later extension, borders directly on the historic city wall. Despite later renovations from the 16th through the 19th century, the original medieval architectural form is still clearly discernible—a rare architectural testament to this era.

History of the House: From the Merchants’ Guild to the Stralsund Merchants’ Company

Since 1493, the building has been owned by the Stralsund Merchants’ Guild, an association of merchants that played a significant role in the Hanseatic city. The large hall of the main building served as a venue for the guild’s meetings and celebrations. Stralsund, nestled in the diverse Baltic Sea region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and located not far from Rügen and Greifswald, preserves a unique piece of Hanseatic city history with this building. Long-term renovation work is currently underway on the historic complex.
