Resembling railroad embankments, osers can stretch for many kilometers despite being only 30 to 150 meters wide, bearing witness to the massive crevasses that crisscrossed the inland ice sheet. The crevasses followed the direction of ice flow and were further eroded by meltwater streams.

An “Os”—also known as an “Oser” or “Wallberg”—is a narrow, elongated ridge of gravel and sand that was formed by the retreat of glaciers during the last Ice Age. Such landforms continue to shape the landscape between the Baltic Sea coast and the hinterland to this day.

Formation and Structure of an Oser Ridge

The Oser’s railroad-embankment-like shape is the result of meltwater streams that flowed through crevasses deep within the inland ice sheet. These crevasses ran along the direction of ice flow and were further eroded by the flowing meltwater. The gravel and sand carried by the water were deposited in the crevasses—after the ice melted, these accumulated ridges remained as distinctive elevations in the landscape. With a width of only 30 to 150 meters, Oser ridges can stretch for many kilometers.
