One of the most remarkable monuments in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern stands opposite the palace in Schwerin Palace Gardens: the equestrian statue of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II, the builder of Schwerin Palace. Surrounded by flowerbeds, rose bushes and romantic arcades, it blends harmoniously into the extensive gardens and is one of the cultural sights of the state capital.
The only historical equestrian statue in the whole of Mecklenburg
After the death of the popular Grand Duke, his son commissioned the monumental statue - financed by donations from the population. The Mecklenburg sculptor Ludwig Brunow created the work, which was ceremoniously unveiled in 1893. Among the guests were Kaiser Wilhelm II and the Russian Grand Duke Vladimir. Inspired by equestrian statues of Roman emperors and the Prussian Elector in Berlin, the figure of the Grand Duke is enthroned on a marble plinth more than four meters high - to this day the only historical equestrian statue in the whole of Mecklenburg.
Allegories of the ruler's virtues and historical memorial plaquesThe pedestal is adorned with four allegories of the ruler's virtues of strength, justice, wisdom and faith. Two memorial plaques commemorate key events during the reign of Friedrich Franz II: the construction of the university building in Rostock and the Grand Duke's entry into Schwerin in 1871. The monument survived two world wars and two dictatorships - it escaped being melted down for war purposes as well as the iconoclasm after the end of the war and later being scrapped.

Hedge garden

The hedge garden in Schwerin's southern palace park is a garden that has been preserved from BUGA 2009. Originally designed as a showcase for garden planting ideas, it is reminiscent of labyrinths and mazes from courtly parks. In the immediate vicinity are the Temple of Youth, a restaurant and the Schleifmühle Foam Museum. The hedge garden takes up the tradition of mazes from historical horticulture. Labyrinths served to amuse park visitors, created new perspectives, led them astray and to romantic, dreamy places. In addition, the former Buga show garden shows ideas for your own garden design, for garden boundaries and the creation of small secret garden corners. Different types of hedges - flowering and green - repeatedly create small spaces and oases of greenery.
