On Königsstraße—now Puschkinstraße—across from the Palais Brandenstein stands the stately former grand ducal ministerial palace, whose rear opens onto a largely preserved courtyard. The glazier Schwede built the house in 1873. From 1783/85 onward, Count Bernhard Friedrich von Bassewitz was the owner of the estate, described as a “house with an adjoining wing, a wood shed, and a stable with a carriage house.” Through the purchase of two adjacent plots of land, the property was expanded into a stately residence. Its elegance defines the character of today’s palace. The estate has been in grand ducal ownership since around 1820. Following extensive renovations and the addition of a large hall facing the courtyard, it was designated as the official residence of the President of the Chamber. Since the mid-19th century, various government ministers have resided here. In 1896, the stately residence underwent extensive modernization to serve as the palace for the “Privy Councilor,” the state’s prime minister. About the Style The nine-axis, two-story half-timbered palace features two stately, double-axis mansard extensions in its roof area. The structure of the individual houses is still visible today in the half-timbering of the facade. The complex’s preserved enclosed courtyard underscores the ceremonial character of what was once an urban nobleman’s estate and later the palace of the Grand Ducal Prime Minister.

The Minister’s Palace in Schwerin is one of the most prestigious historic city palaces in Schwerin’s Old Town. It is located on what is now Puschkinstraße, formerly Königsstraße, across from the Brandenstein Palace. The glazier Schwede constructed the building in 1873, although the origins of the property date back to the late 18th century: Beginning in 1783–85, Count Bernhard Friedrich von Bassewitz was the owner of what was then still a modest house with stables and a carriage house.
From a Noble Residence to a Grand Ducal Minister’s Palace
The purchase of adjacent properties resulted in a stately residence, whose elegant appearance continues to characterize the palace to this day. From around 1820, the estate was owned by the Grand Duke and initially served as the official residence of the President of the Chamber. From the mid-19th century onward, various government ministers resided in the palace. In 1896, it underwent extensive modernization and was thereafter assigned to the state’s Minister-President as a representative official residence.

Equestrian monument to Frederick Francis II in Schwerin Palace Gardens

The equestrian statue of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin stands opposite the palace on a square in the palace garden. Surrounded by flowers, rose bushes and the romantic arcades, the grounds are a highlight of the Schwerin Palace Gardens. A monument to the Grand Duke After the death of the popular Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II - the builder of the palace in Schwerin - his son commissioned the construction of a monumental statue. The object was financed by donations. It is considered to be the only historical equestrian statue in the whole of Mecklenburg. An eventful history The work by the Mecklenburg sculptor Ludwig Brunow was ceremoniously unveiled in 1893 - in the presence of high-ranking state guests such as Emperor Wilhelm II and Grand Duke Vladimir of Russia, as well as all the nobility of the Mecklenburg court. Inspired by the equestrian statues of Roman emperors and the Prussian Elector in Berlin, it was designed according to the typical, mostly military-influenced taste of the late 19th century. The figures of the Grand Duke and his horse stand on a marble plinth more than 4 meters high. The ruler's virtues The plinth is surrounded by allegories of the 4 virtues of rulers: Strength, Justice, Wisdom and Faith. Two commemorative plaques show events from Frederick Francis II's reign - the construction of the new university building in Rostock and the Grand Duke's entry into Schwerin in 1871. The monument was lucky to survive two wars and two dictatorships. It escaped being melted down for war purposes, the iconoclasm after the end of the war and being scrapped.
