Swing Bridge at Schwerin Castle
Since 1897, a swing bridge has connected the castle island with the Schwerin Castle Gardens.
It allowed cargo ships to enter the Burgsee. The rotating mechanism is demonstrated in action on special occasions, such as the Schwerin Castle Festival in June or the “Days of Industrial Culture on the Water” in September. Today, the bridge is usually seen in its closed position. Pedestrians and cyclists use it to cross from the Palace Island to the palace park. It features an ornate iron railing. The initials of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz (FF) can be found on the piers. The bridge’s ingenious mechanism made it possible for a single attendant to open and close the 22-meter-long bridge girder—which weighs several metric tons—using just a hand crank. The bridge girder rests in a stationary bearing. To rotate it, it is lifted onto the actual pivot bearing (the so-called “King’s Seat”) and then rotated on this bearing. Since the Burgsee is closed to boat traffic, the bridge is usually closed. On special occasions, such as the Castle Festival or the Days of Industrial Culture on the Water, the rotating mechanism is demonstrated in action. The bridge was manufactured at the F. Crull & Co. machine factory, a company owned by the Wismar entrepreneur Heinrich Podeus.

The swing bridge at Schwerin Castle is one of the most remarkable engineering monuments in the state capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Since 1897, it has connected the castle island with the expansive castle gardens and once allowed transport ships to enter the Burgsee. It was manufactured at the F. Crull & Co. machine factory, a company owned by the Wismar entrepreneur Heinrich Podeus—a regional legacy that the bridge still bears today.
Sophisticated Rotating Mechanism on the “King’s Chair”
What makes the bridge technically unique: The 22-meter-long bridge girder, weighing several metric tons, can be rotated by a single attendant using a hand crank. To rotate it, the girder is lifted from its resting bearing onto the actual pivot bearing—the so-called “King’s Chair”—and swiveled there. On a daily basis, the bridge is closed and serves as a connection between the castle island and the castle park for pedestrians and cyclists. Its ornate iron railing and the initials of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz (FF) on the piers lend it additional historical character.

Since Burgsee Lake is closed to regular boat traffic, the swing mechanism remains hidden on a daily basis. Equestrian monument to Frederick Francis II in Schwerin Palace Gardens

The equestrian statue of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin stands opposite the palace on a square in the palace garden. Surrounded by flowers, rose bushes and the romantic arcades, the grounds are a highlight of the Schwerin Palace Gardens. A monument to the Grand Duke After the death of the popular Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II - the builder of the palace in Schwerin - his son commissioned the construction of a monumental statue. The object was financed by donations. It is considered to be the only historical equestrian statue in the whole of Mecklenburg. An eventful history The work by the Mecklenburg sculptor Ludwig Brunow was ceremoniously unveiled in 1893 - in the presence of high-ranking state guests such as Emperor Wilhelm II and Grand Duke Vladimir of Russia, as well as all the nobility of the Mecklenburg court. Inspired by the equestrian statues of Roman emperors and the Prussian Elector in Berlin, it was designed according to the typical, mostly military-influenced taste of the late 19th century. The figures of the Grand Duke and his horse stand on a marble plinth more than 4 meters high. The ruler's virtues The plinth is surrounded by allegories of the 4 virtues of rulers: Strength, Justice, Wisdom and Faith. Two commemorative plaques show events from Frederick Francis II's reign - the construction of the new university building in Rostock and the Grand Duke's entry into Schwerin in 1871. The monument was lucky to survive two wars and two dictatorships. It escaped being melted down for war purposes, the iconoclasm after the end of the war and being scrapped.
