Plate village church

Neo-Gothic building with special carved altar, frieze organ and parish barn for social life Today's Plate church was built in 1848 according to designs by Schwerin architect Theodor Krüger.

Other neo-Gothic buildings such as St. Paul's Church in Schwerin and the village church in Banzkow were also designed by him. Only the late Gothic Marian altar, built around 1500, remains from the previous building of the Plater church, which was closed due to the risk of collapse. This carved altar is characterized by the special arrangement of its ten figures. After a fire in 1874, the west tower of the church was replaced by a free-standing belfry. The church organ was built by the Schwerin court organ builder Friedrich Friese in 1873. Thanks to his work, the Friese organ building workshop became the most important in Mecklenburg in the second half of the 19th century. The adjoining parish barn is a popular meeting place and event venue.

Plate village church - neo-Gothic church building from the 19th century

The village church in Plate is one of the most remarkable religious buildings in the southwest of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The current church was built in 1848 to designs by Schwerin architect Theodor Krüger, who was also responsible for other neo-Gothic buildings such as St. Paul's Church in Schwerin and the village church in Banzkow. Plate is located inland, nestled in the vast landscape of Mecklenburg, which visitors to the Baltic Sea coast discover time and again on their way to the region.

Late Gothic Marian altar and frieze organ as special features

One important piece of evidence from the church's predecessor, which had to be abandoned due to the risk of collapse, has been preserved: the late Gothic altar of the Virgin Mary from around 1500. This carved altar stands out due to the unusual arrangement of its ten figures and is one of the most interesting art-historical objects in the church. The organ was created in 1873 by the Schwerin court organ builder Friedrich Friese, whose workshop developed into the most important organ building workshop in Mecklenburg in the second half of the 19th century. The original west tower of the church fell victim to a fire in 1874 and was replaced by a free-standing belfry.

Parish barn Plate - a meeting place with history

In addition to the church building itself, the adjoining parish barn is an integral part of parish life in Plate. It serves as a popular meeting place and event venue and connects the historic church complex with the lively everyday life of the village
