Those who want to experience the waters between the mainland of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the island of Usedom in a special way will find an extraordinary offer in Mönkebude: a sailing trip on a traditional Zeesboot on the Szczecin Lagoon. The "Ghost" - a former fishing boat with characteristic dark brown sails and a robust hull - is a reminder of the region's centuries-old fishing tradition. From May to the end of September, skipper Alwin Harder takes guests out on the water.
Trip options: From 1.5 hours to a full-day excursion
Depending on time and interest, there are various trip lengths to choose from: a short trip of around 1.5 hours, a half-day trip of around 4 hours or a full-day experience on the Szczecin Lagoon. The route leads from the port of Mönkebude towards Usedom and other destinations such as Karnin, Kamp and Ueckermünde. Cyclists can also use the ferry service between Mönkebude and Usedom - a great way to combine the lagoon tour with a cycle tour along the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Traditional Zeesboats - history on the water
Zeesboats are part of the maritime history of the Baltic Sea region. Originally used for fishing on the lagoon, they are now rare witnesses to history. Mönkebude is located in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald, directly on the Szczecin Lagoon. The town can be reached by car via the B109, while the A20 (Neubrandenburg) and A11 junctions offer good connections from Berlin and Hamburg. The nearest major train station is in Ueckermünde, from where Mönkebude can be reached by car or regional bus services.
