The church is oriented east-west on a trapezoidal plot between a state highway and a local road, about 1,000 meters from the lagoon shore. The tower is 18 meters high, including the cross. The church is constructed of brick masonry (wall thickness: nave 50 cm, tower 62.5 cm) as a simple, single-nave hall church (roof pitch approx. 45°), with a recessed wooden beam ceiling and a barrel-vaulted chancel. A photovoltaic system (2002–2004) has been installed on the south side of the roof. With its octagonal spire, the church tower resembles a lighthouse with a viewing gallery.

St. Petri Church in Mönkebude – the first church built in a 750-year-old town

St. Peter’s Church in Mönkebude is a remarkable structure on the southwestern shore of the Szczecin Lagoon in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Although the town looks back on a history of about 750 years, the church was built relatively late: it was constructed in 1933 and 1934, making it the very first church ever built in the community.

Architecture Combining Simplicity with a Striking Spire

The building is a single-nave hall church oriented east-west and constructed of brick masonry. The church tower is particularly striking: its octagonal spire with a viewing gallery is strongly reminiscent of a lighthouse—a fitting reference to the maritime surroundings in this region of the Baltic Sea. The total height of the tower, including the cross, is 18 meters. Inside, a recessed wooden beam ceiling and a barrel-vaulted choir define the character of this simple sacred building. A photovoltaic system was installed on the south side of the roof between 2002 and 2004.

Natural scenery in the Haffküste Landscape Conservation Area

The church is located about 1,000 meters from the shore of the Szczecin Lagoon, nestled within the Haffküste Landscape Conservation Area. To the south and west of the parish lies the expansive Ueckermünder Heide. Anyone wishing to explore the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania away from the well-known tourist destinations such as Rügen, Usedom, or Fischland-Darß-Zingst will find a quiet, authentic destination in Mönkebude and its St. Petri Church.
