Mirow lock - a technical monument on the Müritz-Havel waterway

The Mirow lock is located just outside the town center of Mirow and is considered one of the most interesting technical monuments in the region. It bears the nickname "Gateway to the Müritz", as this is where the Kleinseenplatte and the Müritz were artificially connected in 1935/36. Today, it is an integral part of the Müritz-Havel waterway and therefore an important junction in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's extensive waterway network.

Manual operation and impressive lock chamber

What makes the Mirow lock special is that it is still operated manually by a lock keeper. The system measures 56 meters in length and 6.6 meters in width. Large lifting gates enclose the water chamber, in which a height difference of around 3.5 meters is overcome. From April to the end of October, the lock gates open every hour on the hour during the day - a spectacle that fascinates visitors every time.

Mirow and the lake landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Anyone exploring the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - whether Rügen, Fischland-Darß-Zingst or the Hanseatic cities of Rostock, Stralsund and Greifswald - will find the Mirow lock inland a worthwhile excursion destination that impressively complements the diverse water landscape of the federal state.
