V. to preserve, renovate and use the cultural center and the building ensemble. The Kulturhaus Mestlin can be seen from afar, a large hipped roof towers above all other buildings, only the church tower stretches its spire a little higher, but can only marvel at the size of the building. it forms the center of the former socialist model village of Mestlin, which, in addition to numerous smaller apartment blocks, also includes the former crèche and kindergarten, the school, several residential and commercial buildings on Marx Engels Platz and the former rural outpatient clinic. A sports field and a large park at the Kulturhaus complete the complex. Life once flourished here in the GDR's only model village, which was built entirely in the 1950s. Today, the municipality, to which the buildings were transferred by the state in the 1990s, is struggling to survive. Since 2008, the Denkmal Kultur Mestlin e.V. association has been committed to the preservation, gradual renovation and, above all, use of the Kulturhaus, always with an eye on the overall ensemble. For 10 years, the association has been organizing exhibitions and events, concerts, theater, readings, etc., working with local young people, acquiring funding and using it to gradually carry out the urgently needed renovation. Around 1 million euros have already been invested in the building, but there is still a lot to do.

Mestlin House of Culture - the center of the only GDR model village

The Kulturhaus Mestlin dominates the townscape of Mestlin like no other building: its hipped roof, visible from afar, towers above almost all the surrounding buildings - only the church spire reaches a little higher. The Kulturhaus forms the architectural and social center of the only socialist model village in the GDR, which was built entirely in the 1950s. In addition to the Kulturhaus, the listed ensemble of buildings also includes the former crèche, kindergarten, school, residential and commercial buildings on Marx-Engels-Platz and the former rural outpatient clinic - complemented by a sports field and a large park.

Conservation and voluntary work for the Mestlin building ensemble

The ensemble has been a listed building since 1977 and has had the status of a nationally significant monument since 2011. After the buildings were transferred to the municipality in the 1990s, it has been fighting to preserve them ever since. Since 2008, the Denkmal Kultur Mestlin e.V. association has been committed to the preservation, gradual renovation and lively use of the Kulturhaus. The association organizes exhibitions, concerts, theater performances and readings, works with local young people and acquires funding. Around one million euros have already been invested in the renovation - but there is still a lot to do.

Discovering Mestlin - history in the heart of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Mestlin is located in inland Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, far away from the well-known Baltic Sea coast with its vacation destinations such as Rostock, Wismar and Fischland-Darß-Zingst. It is precisely this contrast that makes a visit so special: anyone traveling through the coastal region and venturing inland will come across an extraordinary piece of German-German architectural and everyday history that is still kept alive today.
