Matzlow-Garwitz · Schwerin & Umgebung · 53.4480° N, 11.7072° E
Matzlow village church

Village church from the late 18th century with characteristic bell tower and carved interior by amateur artist.

The Matzlow village church was consecrated in 1789 after the previous church building was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. A characteristic feature of today's half-timbered church is the relatively large, three-storey bell tower, which was added later. Carvings by hobby artist Gerda Schefe from Schwerin adorn the entire interior. These were created in the early 1990s and have been on permanent loan to the Matzlow church ever since

Matzlow-Garwitz village church - half-timbered church with an eventful history

The Matzlow village church in Matzlow-Garwitz is one of the quiet but remarkable sacred buildings in inland Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It was consecrated in 1789 - as the successor to a church that had been destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. Today's building is a half-timbered church that stands out due to its subsequently added, three-storey bell tower. This gives the small village church an unusual presence that is unparalleled in rural Mecklenburg.

Carvings by an amateur artist from Schwerin

The interior of the church is particularly worth seeing: filigree carvings by amateur artist Gerda Schefe from Schwerin adorn almost the entire church interior. The works were created in the early 1990s and have been on permanent loan to the Matzlow church ever since. They lend the church a personal and artistically multi-layered character that is rarely found in this form - even in comparison to the well-known church buildings in the Baltic Sea region, for example in Wismar, Stralsund or Greifswald.

Matzlow-Garwitz - an excursion destination in rural Mecklenburg

The village of Matzlow-Garwitz is located in the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim, away from the main tourist routes on the Baltic coast. If you want to explore Mecklenburg-Vorpommern beyond Rügen, Usedom or Fischland-Darß-Zingst, you will find an authentic piece of Mecklenburg village culture and church history here.
