Ludwigslust Palace - late baroque residential palace in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
Ludwigslust Palace is one of the most important baroque palaces in northern Germany and is an art-historical highlight in inland Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - a region that visitors usually associate with the Baltic Sea coast, Rügen, Usedom and the Hanseatic city of Wismar. Built between 1772 and 1776, the residential palace of Duke Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Schwerin rises with its fine sandstone façade in the middle of an extensive palace park, which is characterized by baroque avenues, water features and canals.
Golden Hall and ducal apartments in the palace museum
The interior of the palace museum presents an impressive picture of courtly life at the end of the 18th century. The Golden Hall with its five crystal chandeliers and gilded papier-mâché decorations is one of the most magnificent rooms in the palace and is currently being restored. The ducal apartments in the east wing feature original marquetry floors, damask coverings and historical furniture. Particularly worth seeing are the preserved printed paper wallpapers in the former guest apartments and the picture gallery with works by Ludwigslust court artists and rare architectural models made of cork.
Ludwigslust Palace Park - Baroque garden design by Peter Joseph Lenné
The palace park was redesigned by garden architect Peter Joseph Lenné in the mid-19th century in the English landscape style. Baroque avenues, water features and changing visual axes between architecture and nature make a walk here a special experience. Please note: The park is currently temporarily closed due to a fallen tree. The main axis should be accessible again from the end of November. The castle museum, the café and the lawn parterre are still open. In August, the popular open-air event "Kleines Fest im großen Park" invites visitors to the palace gardens.

Ludwigslust town church
📍 Ludwigslust
The "temple-like" town church in Ludwigslust is absolutely unusual by Mecklenburg standards. Not only the colossal altarpiece by two Baroque artists and the magnificent gallery for high nobility are well worth seeing. The church can be visited. The town church was built in 1770 as the court church for Ludwigslust Palace and was designed by court architect Johann Joachim Busch. Together with the palace square and the palace, it forms the largest baroque ensemble in Mecklenburg. In addition to the north-south orientation of the building, the Ludwigslust town church has numerous other special features. Compared to the huge altarpiece "Annunciation of the Shepherds" by the two court painters Dietrich Findorf and Johann Heinrich Suhrland, the bright interior with its design is almost plain. With a painted area of around 350 m², it is considered the largest altarpiece in Europe. The princely box is just as magnificent. Most of the decorations, ceiling rosettes and ornaments come from the Ludwigslust carton factory - in other words, they are made from the famous Ludwigslust papier-mâché. In the central aisle is the sarcophagus of Duke Friedrich, known as the Pious, who commissioned the church in Ludwigslust. The stone sarcophagus was made from a boulder weighing several tons at the grinding mill in Schwerin. Since the late 19th century, there has also been a frieze organ in Ludwigslust. The town church is Protestant and services are held regularly. The church is open to visitors from Tuesdays to Sundays and information material on the history of the church is available on site. Guided tours of the church are available on request.
