Ludwigsburg Palace Chapel

The Ludwigsburg castle chapel dates back to a branch church of the nearby Eldena monastery dedicated to St.

Nicholas. Our church was renovated and became the castle chapel when Duchess Sophie Hedwig of Pomerania Wolgast received the former village of Darsim (Dersem) from her husband, Duke Ernst Ludwig, and built the castle here in 1592. She called the place her Ludwigshoff, which then became our Ludwigsburg.

Ludwigsburg Palace Chapel - a place with deep historical roots

Ludwigsburg Castle Chapel is one of the quiet but significant sacred buildings in the north of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Its history goes back a long way: a branch church dedicated to St. Nicholas of the nearby Eldena Monastery once stood on this site - one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries in the Baltic Sea region, which also had a significant influence on the history of the nearby Hanseatic city of Greifswald.

Duchess Sophie Hedwig and the creation of Ludwigsburg

In 1592, Duchess Sophie Hedwig of Pomerania Wolgast had a castle built on this site. Her husband, Duke Ernst Ludwig, had given her the former town of Darsim as a personal residence. She called her new residence "Ludwigshoff" - from which today's place name Ludwigsburg developed. As part of the castle construction, the old chapel was also renovated and used as the castle chapel from then on, making it part of the ducal residence history of Pomerania.
