Christophorus Church Kröslin

The village of Kröslin is located directly on the Baltic Sea Cycle Route and the North German Romantic Route with views of the Peene River and the island of Usedom.

The Christophorus Church in Kröslin was built at the end of the 13th century/beginning of the 14th century as a cross-ribbed vaulted hall church. The tower has late baroque architectural features. The interior of the village church is characterized by a knotted altar carpet, which was made in the fishing village of Freest in 1948, and a large baptismal font from the 14th century. The villages of Kröslin (Christophorus Church), Freest, Groß Ernsthof, Hollendorf, Karrin, Rubenow, Rubenow-Siedlung and Voddow as well as the two islands of Ruden and Greifswalder Oie belong to the Protestant parish of Kröslin (district of Vorpommern-Greifswald). The church is open from May to October (Mon-Fri 10am-12pm and 2.30pm-5pm). The congregation celebrates services in the church on Sundays at 10 am.

Christophorus Church Kröslin - Gothic hall church on the Peene River

Christophorus Church in Kröslin is one of the most remarkable medieval village churches in Western Pomerania. Built at the end of the 13th or beginning of the 14th century as a cross-ribbed vaulted hall church, it still characterizes the townscape of the small village on the Peene River today. The striking tower displays late Baroque architectural features and thus characteristically complements the basic Gothic structure of the building.

Historical features: altar carpet from Freest and baptismal font from the 14th century

In the interior of the church, two special furnishings catch the eye: a large baptismal font from the 14th century and a knotted altar carpet that was made in the nearby fishing village of Freest in 1948. This connection between the parish and the traditional fishing village of Freest makes the church an authentic testimony to the regional history between the Peene River and Greifswald Bodden.

Ev. parish of Kröslin - between the mainland and the Baltic Sea islands

In addition to the main town, several surrounding villages and the islands of Ruden and Greifswalder Oie belong to the Protestant parish of Kröslin. The parish is located in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald, not far from the island of Usedom and the university town of Greifswald. A service is held in the church on Sundays at 10 a.m.

Kröslin on the Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route - church as a stage destination

Kröslin is located directly on the Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route and the North German Romantic Route. Anyone cycling along these cycle routes along the coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - for example on the way from Stralsund to Usedom - can include Christophorus Church as a cultural stopover. The view of the Peene River and the island of Usedom opposite makes a stop in Kröslin particularly worthwhile.
