Kowall · Stralsund & Vorpommern · 54.1636° N, 13.3082° E
"UNS Riems" museum on the cradle of virus research

One of the most modern research institutes for animal diseases is located on the small island of Riems between Greifswald and Stralsund.

Research into bird flu is also carried out here. "UNS Riems" is a regional veterinary history museum and is dedicated to the beginnings of research by the founder Friedrich Loeffler. The museum complements the history of virology and Friedrich Loeffler, which is depicted in the Loefferhaus on the island. It also deals with the development of epidemic research (beyond foot-and-mouth disease) over the past centuries. It depicts the history of research on the island, but also the life and work of the people on Riems and in Riemserort from 1910 to the present day. The exhibition is open every first Saturday of the month from 2 to 5 pm. Guided tours start every hour on the hour. Visits on any other day of the week are also possible by prior arrangement at museum-uns-riems@web.de!

UNS Riems in Kowall - Veterinary history museum on the island of Riems

The small island of Riems lies between Greifswald and Stralsund, nestled in the charming coastal landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - and with it a special piece of scientific history. The "UNS Riems" Museum of the Cradle of Virus Research in Kowall is dedicated to the beginnings of modern virology and the work of its founder Friedrich Loeffler, who laid the decisive foundations for epidemic research here.

From foot-and-mouth disease laboratory to modern research institute

The exhibition sheds light on the development of disease research over the centuries - far beyond foot and mouth disease. Visitors learn how research on the island of Riems has changed from its beginnings to the present day. The museum is complemented by the Loefflerhaus on the island, which is also dedicated to the history of Friedrich Loeffler and early virology.

Living and working on the Riems - everyday history since 1910

The Regional Museum of Veterinary History not only shows scientific milestones, but also the life and work of people on the Riems and in Riemserort from 1910 to the present day. The exhibition thus combines scientific history with living regional history on the German Baltic coast.
