Hiddensee Museum of Local History in Kloster - the history of an island

The Hiddensee Museum of Local History is located directly on the west beach of Kloster and is one of the island's most important cultural attractions. The building itself has an eventful history: built around 1890 as a sea rescue station, it has housed a permanent exhibition worth seeing for almost 70 years, which documents life on Hiddensee vividly and comprehensively.

The permanent exhibition, which has been redesigned in recent years, takes visitors of all ages into the everyday life of the islanders: how laborious seafaring and fishing shaped life, how the advent of tourism brought relief and attracted prominent guests to the island - all of this comes to life here. A special highlight is a replica of the Hiddensee gold treasure, the largest Viking gold find in Germany. The original is in the Stralsund Museum. The exhibition is complemented by the so-called "Amber Room" with the extensive collection of amber fisherman Ingolf Engels, which impressively demonstrates how diverse the gold of the Baltic Sea can be.

Visiting Hiddensee - getting to the car-free island

Hiddensee is car-free and can only be reached by ferry. There are ferry connections from Stralsund and from various places on Rügen, such as Schaprode. Stralsund itself is easily accessible by train and, as a historic Hanseatic city on the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Baltic Sea coast, is an ideal starting point for a trip to the island.
