Holy Cross Church in Kemnitz

The Holy Cross Church in Kemnitz has a long history.

In the Kemnitz rectory, right next to the church, there is a small exhibition dedicated to the painter Friedrich August von Klinkowström. The Kemnitz church was built around 1300. The Eldena Monastery sponsored the construction of the church, which was expanded several times over the following centuries but also suffered severe damage. The church acquired its current appearance in the mid-18th century. The Neo-Gothic church tower with its four small corner turrets was built in the 19th century. The church is a listed historic monument. Holy Cross churches are churches dedicated to or named after the Holy Cross on which Jesus died. There are three other churches with this name in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: in Rambin on Rügen, in Rostock, and in Waren. Its current appearance dates back to the mid-18th century. The striking neo-Gothic church tower with four small corner turrets was added in the 19th century. The church is a listed historic building and bears a name shared by three other churches in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania—in Rambin on Rügen, in Rostock, and in Waren.

Baptismal church of the Romantic artist Friedrich August von Klinkowström

The church’s baptismal register contains a special entry: the birth of Friedrich August von Klinkowström, who later became known as a painter, educator, and writer of the Romantic era. In the adjacent Kemnitz rectory, a small exhibition commemorates his life and work. The church is thus an authentic starting point for anyone interested in the art history of Northern Germany.
