Karlshagen Church
Along with the church in Bansin, the church in Karlshagen is the only church built in the 20th century on the island of Usedom.
Due to the growing number of residents and vacationers, a church was built and consecrated in Karlshagen in 1912. During World War II, Peenemünde was bombed on the night of August 17–18, 1943. The church, which was destroyed and burned down in the attack, was rebuilt in 1953 thanks to a fundraising campaign led by Karlshagen’s pastor, Adolf Spreemann. In 1991, the church underwent extensive renovation. Today, the church is used for a variety of purposes as a hall church.
Karlshagen Church—A Special Place of Worship on Usedom
Karlshagen Church is one of the most remarkable buildings on the island of Usedom, located on the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. As one of only two churches built on the island in the 20th century—along with the Bansin Church—it holds a special place in the region’s religious and cultural life. It was built in 1912, when the growing number of residents and vacationers in Karlshagen made the construction of a church of their own necessary.
Destruction During World War II and Reconstruction
Peenemünde was bombed on the night of August 17–18, 1943. The church fell victim to the flames and burned to the ground. However, thanks to a fundraising campaign initiated by Pastor Adolf Spreemann, the church was rebuilt in 1953. Following a major renovation in 1991, the church is now in excellent condition and is used for a variety of purposes as a hall church.
